Their function was in comparison to that of 41 patients who received typical rehabilitation and house physical therapy. Quadriceps strength, knee flexibility, and gait had been measured in such assessments as timed up and move, stair climbing and a six-minute walk. The combined group in the progressive strength-training program showed significant improvement in quadriceps strength and functional performance. In addition they demonstrated substantially higher quadriceps strength and useful performance after 12 months than the group that underwent conventional rehabilitation. To verify disability progression, these increases needed to be sustained for at least three months. Additional predefined disability end points are detailed in the Supplementary Appendix. For the MSFC, the measure was the total z score at 24 months, and the analysis included the ratings of all sufferers who completed the double-blind stage or discontinued the analysis after the 12-month visit. Additional information on the MSFC comes in the Supplementary Appendix. Secondary MRI end points were the cumulative number of gadolinium-enhancing lesions at 12 and 24 months and the cumulative number of brand-new or enlarged lesions on T2-weighted images at 12 and two years .
